Solved: Hey guysI I've just inherited a WRT54GS wireless router. I'm trying to find the latest firmware on the support site but it says it is not. As a System Administrator one is usually faced with the challenge of providing the best possible technology solution within the confinement of an economic budget. Hence most small scale companies will definitely prefer the zero cost of a firmware upgrade of a Linksys' WRT54G/GL/GS router as opposed to the cost of purchasing a Server to perform the same function.
Below are the Stages involved:
  • Download Tomato_1_28 version, it can be gotten from various sites, simply type 'download Download Tomato_1_28' into google search bar and a list of possible sites will popup an example of such sites is the URL :
http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
  • Download Toastman Firmware 1.28.7636 VLAN for Tomato wrt54gl. Most links for this download will take you to this URL below:
http://www.4shared.com/file/ALVZehNHce/1287636_VLAN.htm
  • Download B1 Free Archiver (B1FreeArchiver.exe) From the URL below:
http://b1.org
Having downloaded all these you are ready to proceed. You will need to extract the Tomato_1_28 folder from its .Zip file and for that you can use WinRAR or WinZip archiver software both easily available. You will also need to extract the Toastman Firmware 1.28.7636 VLAN from its .B1 file and thats what the B1 Free Archiver is for. Simply install it and use it to extract the Toastman Firmware 1.28.7636 VLAN folder. Now we go to work.
  • Using a network cable connect your PC to the LAN of your Linksys' WRT54G/GL/GS router
  • Open a browser and type http://192.168.1.1 (login: admin, passwd: admin)
  • Go to Administration > Firmware upgrade.

  • Click the 'Browse' button and navigate to the Tomato folder and select the WRT54G_WRT54GL.bin file and click OK and then click the Upgrade button and the bottom of this page. Please note that during the upgrade there must be no interruption what so ever , you are not to touch the computer or the router during this process and for places where power shortage is likely, you are advised to use an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) device.

  • navigate to the Tomato folder and select the WRT54G_WRT54GL.bin file

Wrt54g
  • Click the upgrade button and wait. Usually it takes between 10-25 minutes for the firmware upgrade to be complete.

Download
  • After the firmware flashing has run its cause, you will realize that you can now monitor Bandwidth usage but IP Address monitoring is not yet available. For that you will have to upgrade the firmware from this basic Tomato firmware to Toastman firmware.
  • Go to Administration > Firmware upgrade.

  • Click the Browse button and navigate to Toastman Firmware 1.28.7636 VLAN and select tomato-NDUSB-1.28.7636Toastman-IPT-ND-VLAN-VPN.trx file.

  • Click the Upgrade button and wait for the flashing to run its cause without interruption and afterwards you will be able to monitor IP Address on the Linksys router.

  • Enjoy!!!
  • NOTE: If you want to clear all the data and settings on the Links router before the upgrade you will have to perform the 30-30-30 reset. i.e Hold down the reset button and count for 30 seconds and then unplug the power cable while still holding down the reset button, after another 30 seconds count plug back the power cable while still holding down the reset button and finally after a final 30 seconds remove your hand from the reset button and all the data will be cleared. If you do this before the first firmware flashing all the data will be cleared and after the flashing you will be required to create a new password and reconfigure all the settings again i.e wireless name and passwords e.t.c. but this is not necessary if you don't wish to clear all the current data, you can very well successfully flash the device without resetting it.

Hi,
Could you please tell me how to restore it into original firmware? I simply downloaded the firmware from the linksys website and went to the firmware upgrade menu and loaded the downloaded firmware but it say upgrade fails. Is there any pre-requisites for this?
BTW, I have dd-wrt Firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (09/24/09) micro
Thanks and best regards
Sami

there is nothing wrong with those instructions. if your router is now bricked, you made a mistake.

Got it unbricked it can now accept a ping. But the telnet portion is not working. I can get into telnet but those commands are not recognized. Now i can't even get into telnet. I tried TFTP flashing DD-WRT on it and it failed. Router still alive though. This is my 4th router not to worried just want some type of firmware back on it.

After the 50th time trying it worked. Router is now back to stock firmware. Thank you for your assistance and patience in this matter.

While I'm waiting on my own WRT54G v6 to come in from an eBay seller, I'm curious about what made you go back to the original firmware? Since I'm planning to do the exact opposite, wondering if I should look for potential issues ahead of time. Was it unstable, locking up, something not working or was it just the smallish flash that didn't allow for the build you liked? Please elaborate if you can.
Thanks!

Really no significant problems at all. If you need the router to be a repeater or a bridge then it's worth it. One thing I did notice over stock Linksys firmware is that my internet speeds were slower and a weaker signal. I don't need a repeater or bridge so the stock firmware is satisfactory for me. I just wanted to see what all the hype was about DD-WRT. That's the pleasure with routers you can always go back to the stock firmware. Remember this is a very weak router, you should of just went for a GL at the minimum.

Thanks, sm00thpapa. [I think] I do understand the limitations.
I've had a V5 until recently (no longer functioning) and I was able to put together a build with what I thought to be all the features I wanted - ssh+serial, not that much as far as routing or firewalls per se. I assume V6 is a very similar device, so it should still fit into and work there too.
You're giving a fair warning, and I'm already on a prowl for a larger router. I think I won't give up on this one though until I tried to hack it to a degree at which it's no longer recognizable. Flash chip and DRAM desoldering are already planned for this little guy. If it doesn't kill it, it'll make it stronger, right?
Thanks for your input!

You can not squeeze anymore ram out of this router. I would just load a micro version on it and be down with it. Hopefully it fits your needs. Flashing it back to Vxworks and stock firmware is pretty simple I just did it.

I'm reverting/restoring back to generic linksys firmware because my wrt54g v6 cannot handle the bit torrent connections. It cripples my router if I have dht enabled. I didn't have this problem with stock/generic linksys firmware until I changed to dd-wrt. I only did the change to dd-wrt firmware for the stronger signal. I will try the corner reflector from free antennas: http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/Ez-10/index.html to see if my signal improves while I have the linksys generic firmware.
So I found this link: http://www.bitsum.com/openwiking/owbase/WRT54G5_CFE/#h18 to revert back.
Has anyone tried this?

I assume you are plugged into the router (wired) and not wirelessly when you do these steps...?

Yes you must be hard wired to the router.
